Miniature Circuit Breaker
MCB (Miniature Circuit Breaker) is a circuit breaker with maximum over current and short circuit safety facilities. It automatically turns off electrical circuit during an irregular network situation means both in overload situation and defective state i.e.it basically detects the state of the fault and interrupts current flow. This prevents overheating in the event of excess current & offers fire safety. MCBs are delay trip devices to which over current magnitude limits the running time. This
means that they are worked if there is sufficient overload to produce a danger to the circuit being covered. It is a mechanical switching system capable of generating, carrying and breaking current under normal circuit current and also breaking automatically under anomalous conditions.
This is used to protect the household appliances from short circuit and overload current MCBs to heavy electrical machines. A circuit breaker can be reset to normal operations, unlike a fuse that works once and should be replaced.
Three main types of MCBs are categorized according to their instantaneous tripping currents. They are
1. Type B MCB
2. Type C MCB
3. Type D MCB
TYPE B MCB:
This type of MCB can trip instantly at a rate of 3-5 times its rated current. They are usually used for resistive or weak inductive loads where there are very limited switching surges.
USAGE: Industrial, residential or light installations.
TYPE C MCB:
This form of MCB can trip instantly at a rate of 5-10 times its rated current. These are usually used for high inductive loads where switching surges are high. USAGE: Small Motors, Florescent Lighting, Commercial and industrial installations which are highly inductive.
TYPE D MCB:
This type of MCB will trip instantly at a rate of 10-25 times its rated current. Normally these are used for very high inductive loads, where high inrush current is very common.
USAGE: Applications in manufacturing and commerce like x-ray machines, UPS systems, industrial welding equipment, large winding motors, etc. MCB's very simple uses are to secure the circuit (wire, attached load and equipment, etc.) in the event of: short circuit over current over load
There are few benefits that come with MCBs over Fuse:
It can easily locate the defective region of an electrical circuit
It is easy to resume the supply
Improved interface: Knob
Electrically safer
Maintenance and repair costs lower.
